What is Clinical Supervision?

Look up ‘Clinical’ in the dictionary and you’ll be met with a definition that’s all about the analytical and the objective. Which is technically correct – but definitely misses the authentic connection, human understanding and empowering environment that Clinical Supervision offers.

In the same way, you might see a word like ‘Supervision’ and immediately think of top-down advice giving (like a driving instructor or a teacher) – instead of the guided reflection Clinical Supervision actually offers. You’re not being told what to do – you’re being given time to talk through how you might grow forward.
And that’s what Clinical Supervision is all about.

It’s an ongoing opportunity to pause and reflect on your work. To make sense of the stuff that’s going on in your head. To work through the particulars of certain incidents or interactions that might be impacting your work. To analyse what went well (and what didn’t) and feel motivated to take your next steps personally and professionally.

Ultimately, Clinical Supervision supports practitioners to come to work each day and keep providing amazing care to others, without feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. And that takes a special kind of magic – that can’t be put into words. (But can definitely be felt in the ways you can flourish in your career!)
